Work Based Learning
Options for Work Based Learning at Monticello High School
We are proud to share that our Work-Based Learning program has been awarded the Minnesota Youth Skills Training Grant through the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry. This grant supports programming from 2025–2027 and will expand hands-on, career-connected learning opportunities for students. Funding will help strengthen partnerships with local employers, provide paid work experiences, and equip students with in-demand skills that prepare them for high-wage, high-demand careers after graduation.
- On the Job Training(OJT): Students will make their job part of their classroom experience. They will attend class at the high school one day per week and will work at their jobs on the remaining afternoons. Training focuses on 21st Century success skills students need to transition from school into the workforce. Students are required to work at least 40 hours per month, and provide pay stubs in class. Students must obtain a job by the start of the course, and stay employed in order to remain eligible for the class. Scheduled the last two class periods of student's day.
- Youth Internship & Apprenticeship: Students will engage in paid work-based experiences. Students will receive assistance with internship placement from the Internship Program Coordinator. Students will demonstrate skills needed to land and secure a job, review workplace safety regulations and labor laws, and gain exposure to financial information that will aid them in immediate and long-term goal planning.
- Areas of focus: Manufacturing, Healthcare, and Automotive careers
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Program: The CNA program provides classroom and clinical training for students interested in pursuing direct patient care in hospitals, nursing homes or home health care settings. The course includes orientation, classroom/lab training, and hands-on clinical training at a local healthcare facility. Upon completion of all class hours and clinicals, students will be prepared to take the state exam to be a Certified Nursing Assistant in the state of MN. This certification is a prerequisite to most LPN or RN programs in Minnesota and is valuable to anyone interested in direct patient care.
- Youth Service-Magic Adventures: This class is for high school students who want to work at Monticello School District's before/after school child care program called Magic Adventures. This program is housed at our elementary school buildings across the district. Students will inspire, nurture, care, and lead our younger students (Pre-K to 5th grade) through a blend of education, recreation and personal development. This is a paid position and and the class is offered the last hour of the high school day.
