Welcome!
Welcome to the Monticello High School Student Center!
The School Counselors at Monticello High School will work to help all students with their
development in the areas of academics, social/emotional, and career and college readiness.
Students will be prepared to face the growing challenges of the 21st Century as lifelong
learners and productive global citizens.
Our role is to challenge students to become the best versions of themselves by
working with students individually, in small groups, classrooms, and through multiple
programs and class meetings. We also work as liaisons with community supports for
students and families in need. Through a holistic approach, students will
learn to self-advocate, build resiliency, and push themselves academically to
prepare for a life beyond high school.
Please use the links on our page to learn more about what our department has to offer our students, families, and communities.

SADD
MHS Students Against Destructive Decisions
MHS students presented a message to the student body about the importance of community and to stand up and speak out to create a strong school community. The SADD group then asked all students to contribute to this mural by designing a quarter of one circle. The mural can be seen on Main Street at the High School
For Parents
Parents do play a role in influencing adolescent behaviors. Research has shown that adolescents who perceive that their parents disapprove of chemical use are less likely to use alcohol, tobacco or other illicit substances.

For Teens
Drug and alcohol use can be troubling for all involved. Know that it is OKAY to talk about your own use, or some else's and ask for help from the supportive people in your life. If you are concerned about getting help privately, remember that in Minnesota it is the state law to keep services for teens confidential (for reproductive health, mental health, and chemical use). Ask a school counselor or other professional provider for more information about confidentiality.
The following additional information/links is researched-based information about alcohol use and drug abuse, including help with cutting-back or quitting use.

Scholarships
Scholarship Information
You may have heard people say there are “millions of scholarship dollars that go unclaimed each year.” You have probably also talked to parents who have told you that their son or daughter was an outstanding student and could not get a scholarship.
The fact is, there are thousands of scholarships; however, most of these scholarships have very specific eligibility criteria (e.g., the student must go to XYZ college, be in the top 5% of his/her class, and have an ACT score of at least 28, or a student must belong to a particular ethnic group, race, or religion, have overcome a great obstacle, have great leadership skills, a specific major, etc.)
When it comes to academic scholarships, students generally must have an outstanding GPA (3.5 or better), high test scores (ACT 27+, SAT 1200+), excellent recommendations, and be involved in extracurricular and/or community activities. To receive an athletic or talent scholarship, a student must be truly outstanding.
Even though it is not easy to obtain academic or talent scholarships, students and parents who are willing to invest the time and energy may find that their efforts pay off handsomely.
Where to look for a Scholarship (In rank order)
1. Local scholarships- Will come out in March 2024
2. Financial Aid Office-
At your college
3. Your church, parents’ place of work, any organization to which your family belongs
4. Misc. Scholarship Opportunities

PSEO
PSEO: Enrollment Process
1. The student and a parent/guardian must attend an MHS PSEO Advising session to review
program specifics and your individual credit requirements. Group sessions are scheduled in
March and April of each school year. If you missed the group sessions, contact your Counselor.
2. Public school students must notify high school of an “intent to enroll” as a PSEO student by
May 30 of the current academic year. MHS students and a parent/guardian will document that
intent on the Notification of PSEO Enrollment Form. (Form completed annually, by May
30). Students who do not FORMALLY notify their high school of their intent to enroll as a PSEO
student for the following year will not be allowed to participate as a PSEO student the
following year.
** STEPS 1 & 2 ABOVE MUST BE COMPLETE BEFORE MHS STAFF WILL SIGN NOSR,
APPLICATION FOR ENROLLMENT OR COMPLETE UNIVERSITY CREDIT TRANSFER DOCUMENTATION. **
3. Apply to a College or University and follow their application, orientation & enrollment
process.
- Applications begin on college/university websites
- Contact postsecondary institution(s) to understand PSEO admissions requirements, course availability and application process/timeline at that institution.
- Meet application & eligibility requirements as determined by the University.
- Attend PSEO information/advising sessions as required by the College or University.
- To submit your high school transcript to an institution, create a Parchment account. Be sure to use your PERSONAL email address (not your Monticello account).
- Students are responsible for submitting all required documentation to the university.
- The College will require a signed PSEO Notice of Student Registration (NOSR) prior to the start of EACH SEMESTER. As noted above, MHS staff will not sign or provide a signed NOSR until steps 1&2 have been completed.
- Once you have been formally accepted to a College or University, look for information on how to complete THEIR Orientation. This info is usually sent to the student email, available on their website or YOU can contact the PSEO office. This is typically required before you can set up your advising meeting with a University staff member.
- University orientation and a University advising session will typically be required before registering for University courses.
ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- If you have an IEP or 504 plan, make an appointment with the Disability Services Center on Campus to discuss available accommodations. (this will not be sent from MHS).
- Maintain good communication with your School Counselor to ensure you meet MHS graduation requirements. Communication with the school, and understanding grad requirements, is the responsibility of the PSEO Student.
- If you have questions about College/University courses, schedules or policies, contact the University PSEO advisor. MHS Counselors cannot provide university specific advising information.
